Learning Objectives

• Civil Engineering Design
• Mathematics for Construction Engineers
• Computer Aided Design in Civil Engineering
• Construction Technology
• Construction Processes
• Structural Design

Civil Engineering Design

• Identifies the specific role and responsibilities of the engineer within the broad design framework of the built environment.
• Understand the link between concept, modeling/analysis and detailed design in generating a 'total' solution to a design project and able to communicate the designs to the clients and officials
• Understanding of how professional practice operates and skills of
communication (including written, drawing, oral/discussion/argument/reasoning) that will best allow the clear description and definition of the engineering solution to other built environment professionals.
• Develops team working skills, including personal accountability and responsibility.

Mathematics for Construction Engineers

• Understanding the Background in Trigonometry and Algebra that is needed to make basic calculation in applied areas and to advance to a study of calculus.
• Developing the competence in measurement, algebraic operation, trigonometry, exponents and logarithms, graphing and solution of equations.
• Developing the cognitive skills, core skills and professional awareness.
• Upon successful completion student will be able to apply mathematical skills to solve real life problems in the built environment sector.

Computer Aided Design in Civil Engineering

On completion of this module, students will be able to understand and work with

Part 1:
•  2D Design Drafting
• Drawing in 2D
• Symbols & Symbol libraries
• Layers & Blocks in AutoCAD
• Dimensioning
• Textures, Colors & Text
• Using Paper Space
• File Management in AutoCAD
• Printing vs. Plotting
• Sharing AutoCAD Files
• Auto CAD & Desktop Publishing
• Exporting Drawings etc.

Part 2:
•  Designing in 3D
• Understanding & working in 3 dimension Introduction for sketch up

Construction Technology

• To identify and understand the range of advanced technologies that are available and appropriate for the construction.
• Provides the facility on understanding of the crux of technological decision-making in the context of the wider construction process.
• To provide the necessary skills to allow the evaluation of a range of technologies towards the adoption of an appropriate design decision.

Construction Processes

Upon completion of this module, the participants will be able to:
• Have an understanding of the Construction design and process in the construction especially on topics related to Excavation, Foundation,Floors, Walls and Partitions, Doors and Windows, Staircases, Roofs,Other Building Work, Scaffolding, Sheet Piles and Shoring.
• Equip knowledge with design and process involved relevant to the local context (Singapore construction industry).
• Student will able to prepare simple design of the parts with considering
the functional requirement and also the material requirement.

Structural Design

• Able to calculate the bending moments and shear forces for statically determinate structures.
• To demonstrate the bending deflections for statically determinate structures.
• Able to appraise the behavior of elastic columns subjected to axial loading.
• Analyze the force, reaction force, stress, strain, shear and Moments.
